Am I allergic to jewelry? |
| |
True allergic reactions to the metals in rings are unusual. The symptoms include redness, itching, and fine blisters. Such reactions to silver,
gold, and platinum, however, are very rare. Allergic reactions to jewelry containing a nickel alloy, such as white gold, are another matter. A
nickel allergy can show up when ears are pierced. If you suspect such an allergy, try switching from white to yellow gold. This will eliminate
all nickel. If a ring is giving trouble, we suggest that you have the inside plated with rhodium or pure gold.
A more common type of dermatitis is a result of a buildup of soaps, detergents, hand creams, and wax under rings and other pieces of jewelry.
This can cause a burning sensation and redness of the skin. Removing rings before using soap or detergent and cleaning rings frequently helps
prevent this kind of irritation.
